A Snowflake implementation has two separate costs: platform consumption, which Snowflake bills in credits and storage, and services labor, which a partner bills in hours or fixed fees. At October 2026 list prices a mid-size analytics workload costs about $50,000 a year to run. Services range from about $54,000 to $79,000 for a small first deployment up to $655,000 to $952,000 for migrating a mid-sized warehouse, depending on team size, duration and rate. All of these are estimates; the inputs are shown below so you can replace them with your own.
This guide is part of our Snowflake consultants research.
What does the Snowflake platform itself cost?
Snowflake bills by consumption: credits for compute and a monthly fee per terabyte for storage. On-demand list prices on AWS US East are $2.00, $3.00 and $4.00 per credit for Standard, Enterprise and Business Critical editions, and $23.00 per TB per month for storage (Snowflake pricing page, October 2026).
Estimate for a mid-size analytics workload on Enterprise edition, AWS US East, on-demand list prices, standard (Gen1) warehouse rates and 10 TB of compressed data:
| Item | Assumption | Credits per month | Cost per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| BI warehouse | Medium, 4 credits per hour, 10 hours × 22 business days = 220 hours | 880 | $2,640 |
| ELT warehouse | Small, 2 credits per hour, 4 hours × 30 days = 120 hours | 240 | $720 |
| Dev and test | X-Small, 1 credit per hour, 3 hours × 22 days = 66 hours | 66 | $198 |
| Serverless and cloud services | Allowance of 10% of warehouse credits (1,186 × 0.10, rounded) | 119 | $357 |
| Storage | 10 TB × $23.00 | n/a | $230 |
| Total | 1,305 | $4,145 (about $49,740 a year) |
Credit rates per warehouse size are from Snowflake's Service Consumption Table (effective October 15, 2026); all hours and the 10% allowance are DCF Research assumptions. Changing only the edition moves the same workload to $2,840 per month on Standard ($2.00 per credit) and $5,450 on Business Critical ($4.00). Enterprise in AWS EU (Dublin) at $3.90 per credit is about $5,320.
The estimate leaves out data transfer and AI features, which bill separately in AI credits. It also ignores capacity discounts: a capacity contract prices credits as the on-demand price less a discount set in your order form, and Snowflake does not publish those discounts. Platform cost follows usage, so it grows with query volume and refresh frequency rather than with the size of the services contract; see Snowflake cost optimization for ways to hold it down.
What do implementation services cost?
Services cost is hours times rate: team size, duration and a blended hourly rate. Partners rarely publish rates, so we use a public anchor. The US General Services Administration's CALC+ database lists federal ceiling rates with a median of $149 per hour across 838 data engineer labor-category records and $158 across 913 data architect records (queried October 23, 2026).
| Labor category search | Records | 25th percentile | Median | 75th percentile |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Data engineer | 838 | $125 | $149 | $183 |
| Data architect | 913 | $131 | $158 | $188 |
Ceiling rates are the maximum hourly rate a vendor may charge federal buyers under a schedule contract. Commercial quotes can sit above or below them, and blended rates that include nearshore or offshore staff will differ. Use them as an order-of-magnitude anchor and replace them with the rate cards you receive.
Estimate by engagement shape, at $126, $150 and $183 per hour: the 25th percentile, median and 75th percentile of a narrower GSA query for titles containing "data engineer" (about $1 from the table above, which uses every matching record):
| Engagement shape | Assumed duration and team | Hours | At $126 | At $150 | At $183 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Quick start: first production use case | 8 weeks; architect 25%, one engineer full time, delivery lead 10% | 432 | $54,432 | $64,800 | $79,056 |
| Warehouse migration, one mid-sized source | 26 weeks; architect 50%, three engineers, one validation engineer, delivery lead 50% | 5,200 | $655,200 | $780,000 | $951,600 |
| Managed service, light | 0.5 full-time equivalent | 80 per month | $10,080 | $12,000 | $14,640 |
| Managed service, heavier | 2 full-time equivalents | 320 per month | $40,320 | $48,000 | $58,560 |
Arithmetic: a full-time role is 40 hours a week. Quick start = 80 + 320 + 32 = 432 hours. Migration = 520 + 3,120 + 1,040 + 520 = 5,200 hours. Managed service uses 160 hours per full-time equivalent per month. Cost = hours × rate. Durations and team sizes are DCF Research assumptions for planning, and a fixed-price quote will include contingency, so it can differ in either direction. Smaller teams or shorter schedules scale linearly.
Quick start. In this estimate, a first production use case: account and role design, cost guardrails, one ingestion pipeline, one BI connection and handover. Snowflake's own QuickStart service is narrower. Its published statement of work (the government variant, which appears to date from April 2022) describes fixed-price workshops over one to two weeks with about 30 to 40 hours of customer time with a Snowflake solutions architect, and puts the price on the order form. Partner packages with the same name vary, so ask whether the build is included.
Migration. Cost scales with the number of objects, the amount of procedural logic, the reports to repoint and the depth of validation, not with terabytes alone. Our Snowflake migration guide covers phases and timeline ranges.
Managed service. A retainer for platform operations, pipeline support and cost governance, priced as full-time-equivalent staff or as a fixed monthly fee. Define response times, what is in scope, and who owns monitoring and budgets.
What does a first-year budget look like?
Add platform consumption to services for the same year. The two scenarios below combine the estimates above at the same three rates; build-year consumption is often higher than steady state because of testing and parallel running, so treat the platform figure as a floor.
| Scenario | Services included | Platform | Total at $126 | Total at $150 | Total at $183 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small first deployment | Quick start, 432 hours | 12 months of the mid-size workload, $49,740 | $104,172 | $114,540 | $128,796 |
| Mid-sized warehouse migration | Migration plus six months of light managed service, 5,200 + 480 = 5,680 hours | $49,740 | $765,420 | $901,740 | $1,089,180 |
Estimate: total = hours × rate + $49,740. At $150, the migration scenario is 5,680 × $150 = $852,000 plus $49,740 = $901,740. Overlap costs from the section below, such as the legacy platform during the parallel run, are not included.
What drives the services price?
Cost follows how much code and logic must be converted and validated, how many systems and consumers are involved, how deep the testing goes, and which security or latency requirements apply. Data volume is only one input.
- Source systems and objects. More systems, objects and downstream consumers mean more conversion, testing and repointing. Snowflake's migration documentation calls dynamic SQL often the hardest code to convert.
- Validation depth. Row-level comparison across many tables costs compute and time. Snowflake advises starting validation with a small set of tables and enabling row-level checks only where needed.
- Security and compliance. Private connectivity and failover features need Business Critical edition, which raises the per-credit price as well as the design work.
- Ingestion pattern. Streaming or change-data-capture feeds take more design and testing than scheduled batch loads.
- Environments and handover. Separate development, test and production, deployment automation, and training for your team all add hours.
Which costs do quotes usually leave out?
Quotes cover a partner's labor and the tools it names. Check the items below before you compare quotes.
- Snowflake usage during build. Development and test warehouses, repeated full loads, validation queries and any parallel run all consume credits.
- Legacy platform costs. The old system's licenses and hosting continue while both run.
- Third-party tools. Replication, ETL or ELT, data quality, catalog and BI connectors each carry their own subscriptions.
- Cloud provider charges. Snowflake does not charge for data ingress, but your current provider may charge to move data out of its network. Check its price list.
- AI features. Billed separately in AI credits.
- Your own staff. Business experts for testing and sign-off, and the platform owner.
- Training. Courses and certification for the team that will run the platform.
Does an Elite partner cost more?
We found no public source showing that Snowflake's partner tier changes hourly rates. Snowflake says a tier reflects certifications, closed pipeline, deal registrations and customer success stories, and that Select, Premier and Elite partners each pay an annual fee.
Snowflake's partner directory lists Slalom, Capgemini and Tiger Analytics as Elite Services partners, and Analytics8 and Thoughtworks as Select (checked October 2026). DCF Research tracks 50 data and AI consulting firms using public evidence, and firms cannot pay to change their score or rank. Compare rate cards, staffing plans and same-source references directly instead of using tier as a price proxy. For rate context beyond Snowflake, see data engineering consulting pricing.
Frequently asked questions
Does a partner quote include Snowflake licensing?
No. Snowflake bills consumption separately, either on demand or against a prepaid capacity commitment. A services quote covers the partner's labor and whatever tools it names. Confirm in writing who pays for Snowflake usage during build, testing and parallel running.
How can I estimate the platform bill before building?
For each warehouse multiply credits per hour by expected hours and the price per credit, add storage and an allowance for serverless features, as in the table above, then check the result against Snowflake's pricing calculator. A short proof of concept on representative data gives real consumption figures.
Should we ask for a fixed price or time and materials?
Fixed price suits well-bounded scopes such as a quick start or a wave with known object counts; time and materials with a cap suits discovery-heavy work. Either way, tie change orders to objective units such as objects converted or reports repointed. Snowflake's own QuickStart statement of work treats anything outside the listed scope as a change order.
