Snowflake and Databricks now overlap on SQL warehousing, Python data engineering, AI functions and open table formats, so a feature checklist rarely decides the choice. Base the decision on where your team's skills, data and workloads sit, then confirm it with a proof of concept on your own data. Partner selection follows the platform: Snowflake's directory shows Select, Premier and Elite tiers, while Databricks' public directory shows no tier for consulting partners.
This guide is part of our Snowflake consultants research. Platform facts and prices come from each vendor's documentation and pricing pages and are as of October 2026.
Which platform fits which workload?
The vendors' documentation points to different starting points. Snowflake describes compute as virtual warehouses that process SQL statements, with Snowpark for Python, Java and Scala. Databricks makes Delta Lake the default table format and supports Python, R, Scala and SQL in notebooks. Both now support Iceberg tables and sell AI functions.
| Dimension | Snowflake | Databricks |
|---|---|---|
| Where compute runs | Virtual warehouses managed by Snowflake, which describes the product as fully managed | Classic compute runs in your cloud account; serverless compute runs in a layer within the Databricks account |
| Table format | Native tables use Snowflake's internal columnar format; Iceberg tables follow the open Iceberg specification, with Snowflake or an external catalog | Delta Lake, open source, is the default for all tables unless specified; managed Iceberg tables in Unity Catalog are supported |
| Languages | SQL, plus the Snowpark library for Python, Java and Scala | Python, R, Scala and SQL in notebooks |
| Catalog and governance | Horizon Catalog, which Snowflake describes as a catalog for data inside or outside Snowflake | Unity Catalog, described as a unified governance solution for data and AI assets |
| AI | Cortex AI functions, billed in AI credits per million tokens | AI products priced per DBU, starting at $0.07 per DBU |
A reasonable starting hypothesis is that SQL-first analytics served to many business users suits Snowflake's operating model, while Spark-style engineering, streaming and machine learning on files in your own cloud storage suit Databricks'. Both vendors cover both ends, so test that hypothesis before relying on it. Run three to five representative workloads on each platform, for example a heavy transformation, a BI dashboard under concurrency, an ML or AI job and a change-data feed, and compare cost, runtime and engineering effort. Databricks' own pricing FAQ recommends side-by-side proofs of concept when estimating savings. For the architecture side, see our guide to lakehouse architecture and implementation.
How do the pricing models differ?
Snowflake bills credits that include the infrastructure, plus storage per terabyte. Databricks bills DBUs by product and compute type; with classic compute you also pay your cloud provider for the instances, while serverless prices include them. A per-unit price comparison does not predict your bill, so compare cost per workload.
| Snowflake | Databricks | |
|---|---|---|
| Billing unit | Credit. Standard warehouses use credits per hour by size (X-Small 1, Medium 4, Large 8), billed per second after a 60-second minimum | DBU, a normalized unit of processing power, billed per second and priced by product |
| List prices | $2.00, $3.00 and $4.00 per credit (Standard, Enterprise, Business Critical; AWS US East, on demand) | Starting at $0.15 per DBU for data engineering, $0.22 for data warehousing, $0.40 for interactive workloads and $0.07 for AI. SQL warehouses on AWS Premium in US East: Classic $0.22, Pro $0.55, Serverless $0.70 with cloud instance cost included |
| Cloud infrastructure | Included in the credit price | Classic compute: billed by your cloud provider on top of DBUs. Serverless: included |
| Storage | $23.00 per TB per month, on demand (AWS US East) | Databricks says pricing is based on compute usage, and that storage and networking costs vary by service and cloud provider |
| Discounts | Capacity commitment with a discount set in the order form | Committed-use contracts; larger commitments earn larger benefits |
| Other billed items | Serverless features at multipliers; AI credits | Platform tiers and add-ons, managed services, data transfer, storage |
Sources are Snowflake's pricing page and Service Consumption Table (effective October 15, 2026) and Databricks' pricing pages. The units are not interchangeable. A Snowflake Medium warehouse costs $12 per hour at $3.00 per credit (4 × $3.00, DCF Research arithmetic), but a Databricks SQL warehouse of similar size depends on its DBU rate per hour, plan, cloud and region, so this guide does not give a like-for-like hourly figure. Compare total cost for the same workload, including the engineering time to build and operate it.
How do skills and certifications differ?
Both vendors' certification exams are taken by individuals, while firms earn tiers or specializations. Snowflake's SnowPro program has a Core exam plus Advanced and Specialty exams for roles such as Architect, Data Engineer, Administrator and MLOps Engineer. Databricks certifies roles such as Data Engineer (Associate and Professional), Data Analyst, ML Engineer and Generative AI Engineer.
- Skill emphasis. Snowflake work tends to lean on SQL and data modeling, with Snowpark for code; Databricks work tends to lean on Python or Scala and notebook-based engineering. Both platforms run SQL and Python, so the overlap is large and a team can learn either.
- Verification. Snowflake's directory listings show a count of SnowPro Core and Advanced certifications per partner entity; the Databricks directory data we reviewed has no equivalent count. With either vendor, ask for named people and certification details, and check them with the issuer.
- Rates. We found no public source showing that Databricks skills command a premium or discount over Snowflake skills. The US General Services Administration's federal ceiling-rate records are defined mostly by role; only a handful of labor categories name either platform (for example "Databricks Architect"), too few to compare. Ask for rate cards by role and compare staffing plans.
How do the partner programs and directories differ?
Snowflake groups services partners into Select, Premier and Elite, shows the tier in its directory, and says a tier reflects certifications, closed pipeline, deal registrations and customer success stories. Databricks' public directory lists about 1,500 consulting and systems-integrator entries and shows no tier for them.
- Snowflake. On October 23, 2026 the directory listed 1,127 AI Data Cloud Services Partner entries: 885 Select, 131 Premier and 111 Elite. Select, Premier and Elite partners each pay an annual fee, according to Snowflake. Entries are by legal entity and region.
- Databricks. The directory's underlying data held 1,890 records that day. Of those, 1,495 are labeled Consulting & SI (consulting and system integrator), and only 38 of the consulting records carry a solution-area tag such as Data Warehouse Migrations or AI. Databricks runs a separate consulting and system integrator program. Its Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum Brickbuilder Partner Network tiers, announced September 1, 2026, are described as live for independent software vendor (ISV) partners and data providers. Ask any Databricks consulting partner for its current program status in writing. Our overview of Databricks consulting partners covers the Databricks side in more detail.
The table shows firms we track that appear in both directories (checked October 23, 2026). A listing shows a relationship with the vendor, not the depth or quality of the practice. DCF Research tracks 50 data and AI consulting firms using public evidence, does not let firms pay to change their score or rank, and has not audited any firm's delivery work.

Tiers are the partner-tier tags Snowflake's directory shows for each listing; some partner profile pages (for example Accenture's, Deloitte's, EY's and IBM's) display no badge image. Regional listings can differ within one firm, as the KPMG, CGI, NTT DATA, Wipro and Capgemini rows show. Check the entity that will sign your contract.
How should you choose a delivery partner for either platform?
Choose on same-platform delivery evidence, not on a directory badge. Whichever platform you pick, ask for the following.
- Platform-specific references. Two customers with a similar source system and workload on the same platform, with contacts you can call.
- Named, certified staff. Names, certification types and allocation to your project.
- Independence on the platform decision. Snowflake says its tiers reflect closed pipeline and deal registrations and that higher tiers bring more co-sell support and marketing investment, so partners have a commercial interest in Snowflake sales. Ask how the partner's advice on platform choice stays independent, or run the proof of concept with a firm that is not selling either platform.
- Cost governance in the statement of work. On Snowflake, resource monitors, budgets and tags; on Databricks, tags, budgets and billing system tables. Both vendors document them.
- An exit plan. Use open formats such as Iceberg where portability matters, and list the SQL dialect and orchestration code you would have to convert. SnowConvert AI lists Databricks SQL among its supported source dialects, so tooling exists in at least one direction.
- Separate evidence for each platform. If a firm says it does both, ask for references and named teams per platform.
Frequently asked questions
Can one firm cover both platforms?
Yes. Many large firms are listed in both directories, as the table shows, but a listing does not reveal how deep either practice is. Ask for references and named staff for each platform separately.
Does Iceberg make switching easy?
It helps with data, not with code. Snowflake supports Iceberg tables, Databricks supports managed Iceberg tables in Unity Catalog, and Databricks can read Iceberg tables from Snowflake's catalog read-only. Pipelines, permissions, SQL dialects and orchestration remain platform-specific, so a move is still a migration project. See our Snowflake migration guide for phases and timelines.
Which platform is better for generative AI?
Both sell AI functions and hosted foundation models, billed differently: Snowflake in AI credits per million tokens, Databricks in DBUs starting at $0.07. The right choice depends on the models you need, where your governed data lives and your team's skills, so test your own use case on both.
