Data engineering consultants in the US typically bill $110 to $250 per hour for mid-level to senior engineers and $175 to $325 for architects, and large global consultancies quote above that. Nearshore teams in Latin America and Eastern Europe run roughly $45 to $95 per hour, and offshore teams in India roughly $25 to $60. These are DCF Research estimates built from the public sources listed at the end of this guide, not survey results.
This guide is part of our data engineering consulting research.
What is the hourly rate for a data engineering consultant?
The typical hourly rate for a US data engineering consultant is $110 to $165 for a mid-level engineer (3 to 5 years) and $150 to $250 for a senior engineer (6 or more years). Architects run $175 to $325. At the midpoints of the senior ranges, nearshore delivery costs about 60% less than US onshore and offshore delivery about 75% less.
| Role | US onshore | Nearshore (Latin America, Eastern Europe) | Offshore (India, South Asia) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Data engineer, mid-level (3 to 5 years) | $110 to $165 | $45 to $75 | $25 to $45 |
| Data engineer, senior (6+ years) | $150 to $250 | $60 to $95 | $35 to $60 |
| Analytics engineer | Same as a data engineer of equal seniority | Same | Same |
| Data architect or principal | $175 to $325 | $80 to $130 | $45 to $75 |
| Large global consultancy, comparable seniority | $250 to $450 (reported quotes) | n/a | n/a |
DCF Research estimates in US dollars per hour, as billed to the client by a consultancy or delivery partner. They are budgeting ranges, not quotes. They cover consultant labor only; platform fees such as Snowflake credits or Databricks compute, travel and taxes are extra. Seat-based staffing quotes run lower; see our guide to data engineering staff augmentation.
In the UK, contractor day rates quoted in job adverts over the six months to 22 October 2026 had a median of £500 for data engineers (middle half £425 to £600) and £625 for data architects (middle half £536 to £688), according to IT Jobs Watch. Those are individual contractor rates. A consultancy's price also has to cover benefits, unbilled time and margin, so expect it to sit higher. We found no public aggregate for UK consultancy day rates, or for Germany, France or the Netherlands.
Nearshore and offshore rates have been falling. Accelerance, an outsourcing broker, reports that software development rates at its partner firms fell 7.1% in Latin America, 4.4% in Europe and about 8% in Asia during 2025.
Where do these rate estimates come from?
They combine US wage and federal contract data, UK contractor adverts, an outsourcing broker's partner survey and the rates that consultancies publish about themselves. No public source covers data engineering in every region, so the table shows each source and what it measures.
| Source | What it covers | What it shows |

Global consultancies $250 to $450. Nearshore $45 to $95. Offshore $25 to $60. US senior independent contractors $90 to $160 |
| White Tree Solutions, April 2026 | A US data consultancy's published ranges. | Time and materials $150 to $250 per hour for US-based engineers |
Our US column rounds the overlap between GSA's middle half for each experience band and the ranges BD Emerson and White Tree publish. The nearshore and offshore columns rest on Accelerance's regional figures, widened to BD Emerson's bands where Accelerance reports only general software developers. The GSA medians and percentiles are our calculations from the public CALC+ records for labor categories titled "data engineer" or "data architect", excluding overseas categories and "training data engineer" categories.
Two cautions apply. GSA ceiling rates are maximums, and GSA says discounts at task order award are common; labor categories are defined by each vendor. BD Emerson and White Tree sell data engineering services, so their figures are what those firms say the market charges, not audited prices.
Why are consulting rates so much higher than salaries?
A billing rate has to cover the engineer's pay and also benefits, overhead, administration and profit. GSA's pricing guidance puts those at roughly 2.1 to 2.6 times the wage, which turns the BLS median wage for database architects, one of the nearest BLS occupations to data engineering, from $67 an hour into about $143 to $172.
Estimate: $139,500 ÷ 2,080 hours = $67.07 per hour. GSA's guide to building a rate from BLS wages uses average indirect rates of 35% for fringe benefits, 25% for overhead at a government site or 50% at a contractor site, 15% for general and administrative costs, and 10% for profit. $67.07 × 1.35 × 1.25 × 1.15 × 1.10 ≈ $143, and with 50% overhead ≈ $172. US federal contracting rules describe time-and-materials hourly rates the same way, as fixed rates that include wages, overhead, general and administrative expenses and profit (FAR 16.601).
The result sits inside the GSA ceilings above. Treat it as a sanity check, not a measurement, because BLS medians cover all employers and experience levels.
How do pricing models change what you pay?
Consultants price data engineering work five ways: time and materials, fixed price, pods or team-months, retainers or managed services, and a short paid discovery. The main difference is who bears cost overruns: you under time and materials, the vendor under fixed price, and both under a pod.
| Model | You pay | Who carries cost risk | Published price points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time and materials | Hours worked times a role rate, usually with a cap | You. US federal rules note that it gives the contractor no profit incentive to control cost and require a ceiling price that the contractor exceeds at its own risk (FAR 16.601) | Rates above; White Tree: $150 to $250 per hour for US engineers |
| Fixed price | One price for defined deliverables | The vendor, who prices the risk in. A firm-fixed-price contract places maximum cost risk on the contractor (FAR 16.202-1) | White Tree: $25,000 to $150,000 or more. BD Emerson: from about $50,000 for a first warehouse to $250,000 and well past $1 million for enterprise migrations |
| Pod or team-month | A monthly fee for a defined team, typically a lead plus two or three engineers | Shared: the vendor manages velocity, you pay for capacity | BD Emerson: $40,000 to $80,000 per month onshore, $25,000 to $50,000 blended with nearshore staff |
| Retainer or managed service | A monthly or annual fee for support and operations | The vendor, for the service levels it commits to | White Tree: $8,000 to $25,000 per month. phData: Snowflake platform operations from $120,000 per year, usage-based (page checked October 2026) |
| Paid discovery | A fixed fee for two to four weeks that produces a specification and estimate | Low | BD Emerson: $10,000 to $30,000 |
Vendors build the risk of surprises into a fixed bid, so a fixed price on vague scope usually costs more than the same work on time and materials. BD Emerson recommends paying for discovery first and then fixing the price of the build, and says most firms will move 5% to 10% off published rate cards for committed volume.
What do typical data engineering projects cost?
Cost is hours times the rate for each role. On the assumptions below, an assessment runs roughly $17,500 to $22,500, a single-domain pipeline build $63,000 to $114,000, a new warehouse or lakehouse $200,000 to $357,000, and a legacy migration $744,000 to $1.33 million, before a reserve.
| Engagement | Assumed staffing (hours) | Nearshore-led | US onshore |
|---|---|---|---|
| Assessment or target-architecture review | Architect 60 h + senior engineer 60 h (20 h a week each for 3 weeks) | ≈ $17,500 | ≈ $22,500 |
| One-domain pipeline build: 5 to 10 sources into an existing warehouse, dbt models, tests | Architect 80 h + engineers 640 h (2 engineers for 8 weeks plus a quarter-time lead) | ≈ $63,000 | ≈ $114,000 |
| New warehouse or lakehouse: 10 to 20 sources, orchestration, CI/CD, basic governance | Architect 280 h + engineers 1,960 h (3 engineers and a half-time QA or analytics engineer for 14 weeks, plus a half-time architect) | ≈ $200,000 | ≈ $357,000 |
| Legacy warehouse migration: hundreds of tables and reports, parallel run | Lead 1,040 h + engineers 7,280 h (1 lead and 7 engineers for 26 weeks) | ≈ $744,000 | ≈ $1.33 million |
| Support after go-live | Engineer 80 h a month (half time) | ≈ $5,600 a month | ≈ $12,000 a month |
DCF Research estimates. Arithmetic: hours × rate, with the architect or lead at $225 per hour in every column and engineers at $150 per hour onshore or $70 nearshore, all within the ranges above. A full-time person is 40 hours a week. Both columns assume the same hours, although coordination often adds hours to nearshore-led work. The scenarios are illustrations, not benchmarks from completed projects.
Vendor-published ranges are broadly consistent. BD Emerson puts a 12 to 16 week first platform build at $150,000 to $300,000, which contains our nearshore-led estimate and sits below our onshore one, and enterprise migrations at $250,000 to well past $1 million. White Tree puts fixed-scope projects at $25,000 to $150,000 or more, which contains our pipeline-build estimates. Published retainers run higher than our half-time support estimate, which prices engineer hours only; phData's service, for example, includes monitoring and support up to 24x7.
Add a reserve. We use 20% as a planning assumption, which takes the platform build to about $240,000 nearshore-led or $428,000 onshore. McKinsey and Oxford University studied more than 5,400 IT projects and found that large ones, with initial budgets above $15 million, ran 45% over budget on average, and that each extra year of duration increased overruns by 15% (McKinsey, 2012). Data engineering projects are smaller, so read that as a warning about long programs, not a forecast. Platform consumption is a separate budget line; see our data platform TCO guide.
What drives the price of a data engineering engagement?
Seniority mix, firm type and delivery location set the rate; contract type decides who absorbs overruns. Source systems, legacy complexity and regulatory constraints set the hours. Some of these can be measured in public data; others rest on vendors' own statements, which we flag.
- Seniority. In GSA's data the median ceiling for data engineer categories rises from $119 at 0 to 2 years of required experience to $192 at 10 or more years.
- Firm type. Vendors that GSA classes as other than small businesses list a median of $170 for data engineers (161 entries) against $147 for small businesses (657 entries), and $166 against $157 for architects. BD Emerson reports $250 to $450 for global consultancies and attributes the premium to overhead rather than different talent.
- Delivery location. Accelerance's figures show the regional gap. White Tree, a US consultancy that prices US-based engineers, says clients who tried both found the total cost difference narrowed to 10% to 20% once rework and coordination were counted; treat that as a vendor claim.
- Legacy complexity. White Tree notes that every source system adds complexity, and older systems without modern APIs add more. BD Emerson says the strongest predictor of overruns is the number of downstream consumers nobody has cataloged.
- Regulated data and scarce skills. BD Emerson says regulated data raises rates 10% to 25% and certified Snowflake or Databricks specialists carry a 10% to 30% premium. We could not confirm either. GSA lists only seven labor categories that name Snowflake or Databricks, too few to test a premium, and its clearance-flagged data engineer categories show nearly the same median ceiling as the rest ($148 against $150).
How should you compare quotes?
Compare total hours by role, not headline rates, and make every vendor price the same scope. A lower rate with more hours or a junior-heavy team is not cheaper.
- Ask for the staffing mix. Request hours by named role and level, write the seniority mix into the contract, and compute the blend yourself. Twenty percent architect hours at $225 and 80% engineer hours at $150 is $165 per hour; with nearshore engineers at $70 it is $101. A US onshore quote far below the ranges above may mean offshore or subcontracted staff, so ask where the engineers are based.
- Compare total hours. Accelerance calls hourly rates a poor measure of true cost and warns that scope creep, rework and delays can erase the savings from a low rate.
- Match the contract to scope clarity. Use fixed price for well-mapped sources with written acceptance criteria. Otherwise use time and materials with a not-to-exceed cap, and pay for discovery first if sources are poorly understood. BD Emerson advises treating the discovery specification as something you own and could take to another vendor.
- Split out the add-ons. Project management, travel, tooling and platform consumption should be separate lines. Buy Snowflake credits or Databricks capacity directly from the platform where you can, so any reseller markup is visible.
- Make quotes comparable. Our RFP template asks every vendor to price the same scope, team mix and assumptions.
Frequently asked questions
Do consultancies discount their rate cards?
Usually a little. BD Emerson says most firms will move 5% to 10% for committed volume, and GSA notes that task order awards on its ceiling rates are often discounted. Changing the team mix saves more: in the platform-build example above, a 10% discount saves about $35,700 onshore, while moving the 1,960 engineer hours from $150 to $70 saves about $156,800.
Do analytics engineers cost less than data engineers?
We found no public evidence that they do. GSA lists only 29 analytics-engineer labor categories, with a median ceiling of $160 against $150 for data engineers. Quotes follow seniority and platform skills more than the job title.
Where are the rates for AI and machine learning engineers?
Not here, because we found no reliable public data that separates them from data engineering. See AI consulting pricing for that work.
